West Palm Beach, Fla. – April 3, 2018 – Palm Beach Health Network Physician Groups (PBHNPG) is pleased to announce Tom Minas, MD, FACS, an orthopaedic surgeon and cartilage specialist, has opened his practice at the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute in West Palm Beach. Dr. Minas specializes in joint preservation of the knee with autologous chrondrocyte implantation (ACI), osteochondral allograft transplantation, meniscal transplantation, osteotomies, ligament reconstruction, as well as minimally invasive partial and total knee replacements. Dr. Minas is a member of the Knee Society and in 2013 was honored with the Insall Award for his work on long term outcomes assessment of ACI in the knee.

He is on staff at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Dr. Minas is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Prior to joining PBHNPG and the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute, Dr. Minas invented new types of knee reconstruction techniques which resulted in him being awarded 30 patents in the field. Dr. Minas’ work in patient-specific knee replacement has introduced family tissue preserving, customized knee replacement implants based on patient-specific imaging data to restore native articulating geometry. As a pioneer in new joint technology, Dr. Minas helped to design custom orthopedic knee replacements.

Dr. Minas’ vast medical experience, over the past three decades, includes working as an attending orthopaedic surgeon in the Boston, MA, area at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Faulkner Hospital, Boston Outpatient Surgical Suites, Foxboro Day Surgery Center and New England Baptist Hospital. Dr. Minas has held major administrative leadership positions including as Chief of Orthopaedics at the West Roxbury Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Director of the Cartilage Repair Center at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital where in 1999, he set-up the first Cartilage Repair Center in the U.S.A. In addition, Dr. Minas’ academic appointments are comprised of an assistant professorship of orthopaedic surgery at University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA, and as clinical instructor, assistant professor and professor in orthopaedic surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
For his education and training, Dr. Minas completed a fellowship in joint reconstruction at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, and in traumatology from Sunnybrook Medical Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Minas completed an orthopaedics residency at the University of Toronto Medical School and internship at Toronto Western Hospital. He graduated medical school from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1982.

Dr. Minas is currently the Course Director of the Cartilage Research Foundation. He is also a member of The Knee Society, American Academy of Orthopadeic Surgeons, Canadian Orthopaedic Association, International Cartilage Repair Society, New England Orthopaedic Society, AO Alumni Association, The Royal College of Surgeons Canada and College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario, Toronto, Canada.

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Minas has presented his research and findings relating to orthopaedic surgery to the American and British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Journal of Knee Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine and presented at national and international medical conferences. Dr. Minas has a strong had his orthopaedic research published in numerous peer-reviewed books, chapters and papers. He has a determined focus in joint preservation in the young adult, by the development and assessment of cartilage repair and osteotomy techniques. Dr. Minas has been practicing medicine since 1982.
