West Palm Beach, Fla. – September 14, 2020 – Pediatric general surgeon Avraham Schlager, MD, FACS, has joined Palm Beach Children’s Surgical Specialists, a Palm Beach Health Network Physician Groups (PBHNPG) medical practice located in West Palm Beach. Dr. Schlager specializes in pediatric general surgery care including advanced minimally invasive surgery (MIS), oncologic surgery for childhood malignancy, complex neonatal surgery with prenatal counseling, thyroid surgery, inflammatory bowel disease and pectus excavatum (Nuss procedure). He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in Pediatric Surgery and General Surgery. Dr. Schlager is on-staff at Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center located in West Palm Beach and West Boca Medical Center in Boca Raton.

Dr. Schlager is the former Surgical Co-Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Trauma Medical Director at Akron Children’s Hospital located in Akron, Ohio. In addition, Dr. Schlager served as Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), an academic institution affiliated with Akron Children’s Hospital. Dr. Schlager also served as the Director of the Pediatric Surgery Research Fellowship program and worked as a pediatric general and trauma surgeon, and neonatal specialist at the hospital.

For his education and training, Dr. Schlager completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Emory University, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Dr. Schlager completed his general surgery residency and internship at New York University Medical Center in New York, NY. In addition, Dr. Schlager also finished a research residency at Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center located in Jerusalem, Israel. Dr. Schlager graduated medical school from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY.

Dr. Schlager’s findings on pediatric minimally invasive surgery and laparoscopy have been published in several medical textbook chapters. Additionally, Dr. Schlager held editorial positions as journal reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and The Lancet as well as video reviewer for the Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical Techniques. Dr. Schlager has presented his findings on pediatric and general surgery to the medical community at numerous society meetings and symposiums both nationally and internationally. In Aug. 2018, Dr. Schlager received the Traveler’s Award from the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society (IFMSS). Furthermore, Dr. Schlager participated on a Grand Rounds panel discussing the topic of: The Rare Pediatric Trauma Splenectomy.

Dr. Schlager is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Committee, the International Pediatric Endosurgical Group Program Committee, American College of Surgeons, Children’s Oncology Group, International Society of Paediatric Surgical Oncology and American Academy of Pediatrics. He also has experience as a member of the Northeastern Ohio Regional Trauma Network (NORTN) Committee and the NORTN Performance Improvement Committee. Dr. Schlager has been practicing medicine since 2006. He is bilingual in English and Hebrew and competent in Medical Spanish.
