Minimally Invasive Neonatal Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery uses tiny incisions, rather than larger open incisions, in the chest (thoracoscopy) or abdomen (laparoscopy). A small camera is passed through the keyholes and provides the surgeon a high definition picture of the inside of the body. Long, thin instruments are then used to perform the operation.

The advantage of minimally invasive surgery is being able to perform the necessary surgery as well if not better than open surgery with minimal trauma, fewer risks and side effects, but with effective long-term disease resolution. By using minimally invasive techniques, surgeons are able to intervene earlier in a disease process and utilize the technology to perform diagnostic as well as therapeutic interventions.
