Your primary care doctor monitors your ongoing health and wellness along with any chronic medical conditions. This doctor may be a:

  • Family Practitioner (Family Practice) – A medical doctor who cares for children and adults of all ages and may include obstetrics, pediatrics and minor surgery. This doctor may ask an internist to consult on a complex case involving an adult patient.

  • Internist (Internal Medicine) – A medical doctor who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases and conditions, also known as an internal medicine physician.

When to See a Primary Care Physician?

Your primary care physician should be your first point of contact when you have a health concern or illness that is not an emergency. If needed, he or she will coordinate care with any other physicians or medical specialists who should be involved in your care. Your primary care physician will:
